Amid continuing tensions in the West Philippine Sea and the Korean Peninsula, the Philippine government has reaffirmed its commitment to peace, stability, and adherence to international law.

Speaking at the 28th ASEAN–Japan Summit in Kuala Lumpur, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said the Philippines will remain “firm, calm, and resolute” in defending its sovereignty and ensuring the safety of its personnel, vessels, and aircraft.

He raised concern over what he described as “dangerous maneuvers and coercive actions” in the West Philippine Sea, saying these incidents violate the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

“It is regrettable that incidents continue to occur in the West Philippine Sea that have put the lives of Philippine personnel and the safety of our vessels and aircraft at risk,” Marcos said.

The President reiterated the Philippines’ support for the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) and the conclusion of an effective and legally consistent Code of Conduct (COC) to help prevent further escalation in the disputed waters.

“These incidents notwithstanding, the Philippines will continue to remain firm, calm, and resolute in its commitment to the full implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and to achieving productive negotiations towards a Code of Conduct that is effective, substantive, and consistent with international law,” he added.

Marcos also expressed concern over the continued ballistic missile launches by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), urging Pyongyang to halt such activities and comply with United Nations Security Council Resolutions.

“We renew our call on the DPRK to promptly cease these activities and abide by all international obligations… and to commit to peaceful and constructive dialogue,” he said.

During his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, Marcos also discussed humanitarian issues, including the abduction of Japanese citizens, and expressed support for a peaceful resolution to the matter.
