The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Human Rights Committee said misogyny and sexism have no place in the legal profession, urging lawyers to uphold respect for women as part of their ethical duty and commitment to justice.
In a statement issued March 8 for International Women’s Day and the observance of International Women’s Month, the committee stressed that discrimination against women undermines legal ethics and erodes public trust in the justice system.
“There is no room in this noble profession for misogyny and sexism. The Court will never tolerate abuse, in whatever form, especially when perpetrated by an officer of the court,” the committee said, quoting the Supreme Court ruling in In Re: Atty. Lorenzo G. Gadon’s Viral Video Against Raissa Robles (2023).
The committee said the legal system rests on the principle that all individuals are equal before the law, emphasizing that women are entitled to the same dignity, fairness, and protection as men.
It added that lawyers are expected to demonstrate the highest commitment to respecting women and to ensure that gender does not become a barrier to justice.
According to the committee, respecting women is an essential component of preserving professional integrity. Lawyers must treat female clients, opposing counsel, judges, and the public with the same seriousness and decorum accorded to anyone else.
The group also underscored the broader role of lawyers beyond the courtroom, saying members of the profession serve as examples in society and can help dismantle prejudice and advance gender equality.
“Lawyers who value women help to dismantle prejudices and advance gender equality,” the committee said, noting that such actions encourage women to seek justice, pursue careers in law, and participate actively in civic life.
As the country observes International Women’s Month, the IBP Human Rights Committee called on lawyers to take stronger action against injustice toward women and other vulnerable sectors.
The committee said members of the legal profession are especially expected to respond at a time when violence against women remains a pressing concern.
